How to beat Leaf

For those still having issues beating him. Just follow his path, take your time, don't try to be too fast or you'll fall off and will have to restart. It's not a complicated path, it just asks for you to do it correctly, watch how I take my time on the video.

Sadly a bit to hard for me. I'd say  adjust it because if you yourself have to make a how to video on how to do it then it's an issue with the difficulty of it.

game is fun, but I am not practicing for hours just to get through a time trail, at the start of the game. can get up there taking my time, mechanics are fun, but nope guess can't play

(+1)

4 hours for complete the demo in one day...

The gameplay is so much fun, so much so that I forget it was an nsfw game

the platforming in general in this game is actually pretty challenging for this kind of game. this isn't a complaint, i think it's really cool and it's meant to be played be adults so having everything be a little spicier makes sense imho. I'm just stating that compared to like ratchet and clank or banjo kazooie the platforming is relatively difficult.

imho you really shouldn't change anything about the platforming, i think it's really cool and want to see how far you can push it in later levels. but if you're really concerned about people not being able to see all the content like leaf's scene specifically, you could add in a "pity" mechanic where if you fail x (3?) number of times you can get the just skip to the scene anyway.

alternatively if you're convinced the course is just too hard for too large a portion of your players, i'd add a narrow piece of geometry like a rope or a board or some kind of cable between the first roof and the roof of the guard tower, since that's the trickiest part to do, and this is only the first zone.

still can't do it :/

Did you dash before jumping off the small flat tower?

(+2)

yes.  i have a disorder that makes fine motor coordination extremely difficult, so falling off of platforms + missing jumps is very common for me.  its not normally a problem to get to that location, but being timed makes it too difficult to do without just attempting it many, many times

(1 edit) (+1)

I think a large part of the difficulty for this jumping puzzle/race is about not being able to figure out where to go. This could probably be solved pretty easily with some environmental clues and more careful usage of color/contrast. Adding a few carboard panels in jump spots on blank areas like the roofs or even wooden ramps.

Especially for the final jump onto the tower, I think putting some higher contrast scaffolding in the spot you can land at would work. I've drawn in some here:

You can actually make it from here pretty easily if you stand on the railing.

I wasn't actually aware of the significant difference in the order of jumping and dashing, which is another reason I had trouble, but I think the path finding issues are an easier to solve level design issue.

Sorry if this comes across as mean, but I think this game has really good potential. It just needs some polish.

As a side note, I feel like the game is pretty blurry on my setup. Any idea why that might be? Playing 1920x1080 on fullscreen with AA on and CRT off, but the blurriness still feels like a lot.

You're supposed to look at where Leaf is going, he even says it to you...

(+1)

That is entirely true and fair.

And yet, you felt you needed to make a video showing the path to complete it and upload it as an update in the devlog, right? It seemed, to me, like it was because a number of people were having trouble. Ultimately, someone is going to have trouble with even the simplest of things, but I figure this indicates an issue that can be solved pretty easily without having to have outside resources like youtube videos and such. Afterall, aren't watching Leaf and watching this video fundamentally the same? (I say this knowing I might make an ass of myself 'cause I still haven't watched Leaf do it, lol.)

When I got to this point, I felt like I wanted to know how to get to the goal before I tried because I usually get a lot more frustrated under a timer (even if it is only perceived), so I went to try to figure it out before racing Leaf. Maybe other people felt the same way? Maybe they felt like they didn't want to risk losing the race? Maybe they thought something entirely different. idk. Players do weird things for weird reasons you can't always anticipate.

I figure the best you can do is give a variety of 'hints' while trying to minimize things that might come off as 'hand-holding'. Like being able to copy paste with ctrl+v or the right click menu, you could watch Leaf do it or you could figure it out first.

To reiterate, the problems I had were seeing where I was supposed to land and the specific order of dash-jump -> dash -> jump instead of dash-jump -> jump -> dash which is what I had been doing.

I don't intend to be rude with these observations and suggestions. Sorry if this comes off as such, I simply would like to see this game be as good as it can be.

Really? I found a totally different route, that took 30 seconds.

If you pick all collectibles, you already have all paths in minde

(+1)

Heh, I actually looked what leaf's path was and copied it and beated him in 30 seconds

(1 edit)

Funny thing, I beat him another way, on the red barrel (or as this thing is called, where you need to climb to win) it consists of two parts, and at the very end there is a ledge, as a result, I spent almost an hour to perfectly develop a plan on how to climb there, a little luck and hope, the correct placement of jumps and dash and boom, I'm on the spot, time 24 seconds

I just climbed between the 2 buildings at the start until I was on top of the green roof, then dash jump jump dash to the barrel.

my current best time is 23.383! The movement in this game is amazingly fun, and I love the aesthetic so much. Keep up the great work!

Edit: 20.074 now! I can definitely get it sub 20 I think.

(+1)

Movement is so good. <3

I believe in you, aim for 18 seconds next.

(+3)

If you're having trouble beating him, really just watch what he does imo. Copy the moves, the distance you go and how high you can get really depends on what action you do first. I learned that the hard way, if you dash first, jump, you can dash again and jump once more (if I remember it correctly, I haven't played for 3 days lol). So you have to do different orders of moves for different parts of the race. Made me pretty mad and when I finally just sat back and watched what he did instead of where he went I figured out how to get to the top and not where to go to get to the top.

(+1)

exactly, I couldn't have worded it better myself! ^^

(+2)

i was getting so so frustrated with that bit too until like you said it finally clicked that you dash first, jump, then can dash again and jump again in the air 😭 anyways finally beat his ass

Beat it with more than an hour's worth of attempts, following Ace's guide in the main comments. I can't reliably execute those on-the-spot backflips you're doing in the video. I'm not certain if it's a skill issue or the fact I'm on mouse and keyboard, but even two quick taps of w-s would drop me off the platform and half the time I wouldn't even be fast enough to do the slide animation. Also, were the backflips in the tutorial? I had to look at the scroll to figure out what exactly was happening in the guide video.

Another couple bits of feedback- consider making your partners intangible in the time trials. The worst losses were when Leaf would bump me off a small platform- it would usually only happen when I was already losing, but it felt unavoidable and bad. Even if I was just a little slower he could kick me down three jumps and make the whole thing unwinnable. Which leads into suggestion 2- could you put a restart button somewhere in a menu when you're racing? I was going in and out of buildings to reset whenever I f'd up because it was faster than waiting the race out, but I could've saved like 5-7 minutes over all my attempts with a quick reset button.

Thanks again for the game, and the guide.

Funnily enough I was only frustrated that a forfeit wasn't working seemingly, so I just tried enough times watching leaf carefully

I do wonder how do I unlock the scene on the bed from the main game page on itch? is it a dialogue option?

Love the game!! very smoothly and very  compact, genuinely great coding skills, the game play is fun but the default controls are odd, though that depends o your keyboard layout, and a controller would be preferable I wager

Nonetheless, I find the game overall great, and I can't wait for the full release!

(+1)

That scene with Yunn isn't in the game yet, methinks. Believe me, I looked.

Thank you for clarifying!
